DID YOU MISS THE CONNECTION?
For your review, please find a quick overview of the MHSDA May 2 Seminar Program that was held at Farber Auditorium, Bellevue Hospital Center
MHSDA members, expert panelists and guests focused on: Challenges the ACA is bringing to healthcare facilities throughout our area and specifically, the Impact on Security.
What could have been dry or dull was instead lively, informative and useful. Our thanks to each of our speakers, to our moderator, Joe Gulinello and to Joseph Sweeney, Security Director at Bellevue Hospital Center who arranged for us to have the Farber Auditorium available.
Meryl Weinberg, Executive Director of Metropolitan Hospital Center was our first expert. She described how the Center is addressing changes, concerns and improvements. The efficiencies they are instituting will likely help improve revenue and reimbursements for the Center. Other issues may not be predictable as effects of ACA become more dominant in the industry overall.
Kevin Campbell, Security Director at New York Hospital Queens, focused on some of the specific issues that security management faces right now. He also addressed how healthcare security management teams must also prepare for running more multiple full-scale facilities at once and the issues that come with acquiring or affiliating with more community-based clinics and outpatient services.
Allan Schwartz, Security Consultant, focused on approaches for doing more with less. He addressed integrating technology and emergency preparedness so that if faced with fewer staff members it would not mean less ability to respond to a crisis. In essence, make sure emergency procedures are well written and practiced. That way, the question: "What do we do now?" never gets uttered. Allan also focused on integrating security services with technology whenever there were significant cost savings.
Sam Vinicur of SEIMENS substituted last minute for Rob Welton who was our scheduled panelist. Sam spoke about how the expansion of integrated technology systems can serve the healthcare industry and the expanded span of control necessary as healthcare centers grow in the various services and locations that come under their umbrella.
Mark Berger of SECURITECH provided an overview on the change from the "open concept" that had defined hospital centers several decades ago to the present. He noted that TJC was not diminishing its influence and the importance of choosing suppliers you can consider as partners in your security program rather than just suppliers. Security Officer Award
Below are details on our latest Award winner. We'll also honor him at the October 17th event:
MICHAEL ALONSO,
Detective with the NYC Hospital Police
Detective Michael Alonso has been with the NYC Hospital Police Department for over 12 years. Det. Alonso is a dedicated productive officer, with dozens of arrests ranging from misdemeanor offenses to felonies. He was the investigator assigned to the 6th Division
Investigations Unit when it was brought to his attention that several outpatients were experiencing thefts from one particular area, the OPD Ambulatory Surgery Clinic.
As a result of long hours, hard work and due diligence, Det. Alonso exposed a pair of employees who were stealing money and personal property from patents who came
to the hospital for out-patient surgical procedures. Subsequently, both employees were arrested, charged and later terminated from employment, thus closing a crime spree that lasted for nearly a year.
Two months ago, Det. Alonso was investigating a case where computer hard-drives were mysteriously missing from the hospital. After following up leads and conducting interviews, the detective came up with a suspect who was a hospital contractor. He then began to check videos of the various areas where the suspect was assigned. Det. Alonso eventually observed the suspect enter a restricted area with a backpack. Minutes later, the suspect left that area with a full backpack. Det. Alonso spoke with the suspect's first-line supervisor who stated the suspect had no valid reason, permission or authority to be in the restricted area.
The detective immediately interviewed the suspect, who after initially denying any wrongdoing confessed to the theft of hard-drives worth thousands of dollars.
